Dear Davis Center Families:
Success, vocation, independence, and self-determination look different for each of us and is achieved in various ways at various times by our young adults. The variety of experiences provided in cooperation with our community partners focuses heavily on soft skills development so that your student is prepared to step out of public school and into some form of engagement at the end of their transition year. Our overall intention is to provide a learning community where your student can develop a solid foundation of soft skills (as well as a great resume!) that can be generalized to their next experience after the IEP and the school team are no longer part of your journey. Our partnership is key in the time we have together and I am grateful to you, the families of our tremendously talented students, for your work and support of our community!
This handbook will provide you and your student with information on each individual worksite, which will help inform your preferences for the 2024-2025 school year. A variety of factors go into placement decisions including input from you, input from teachers, consideration of all DCC student requests, available spaces at our worksites, and other information that may be available to us (e.g., observations, assessment center data, etc.). It is important that we have a variety of information available to help determine good matches for the year-long community work experience. Your participation and input in this process is very much needed and appreciated.

Team Selection Process and Decision Making
Selection Process and Decision Making:
Factors to Consider
The following components are each considered as part of the placement process as well as a variety of other appropriate, anecdotal factors. These anecdotal components most often include daily observations and interactions with students by DCC staff over the course of one or multiple school years.
- Community Work Experience (CWE) Summary Form
Current teachers will complete the CWE form, which details student performance at their worksite. This form provides information on the tasks students were able to perform independently, with supervision, and with assistance as well as the supports provided for the student in the workplace. Using the CWE form, teachers highlight student job preferences, work attitudes and behaviors, strengths, and provide recommendations regarding a student’s career interests.
- Resume
Davis Career Center students compile a resume that will provide future employers and service providers a summary of their skills, abilities, and accomplishments. Students include their past work experiences, education, achievements, and references.
- Student Input
Student and family input provided via the Team Selection Catalog process (Google link located on Student Selection Form) will be considered along with a variety of other sources of information and factors pertaining to all students attending the DCC. Final placement decisions are made by the DCC principal.
- Level of Support Assessment (LOSA)
LOSA stands for: Level of Support Assessment. The LOSA is a non-standardized assessment tool to be used in conjunction with other data sources to help determine student support needs related to community work experiences instruction. Prior to placing a student into a community work experience setting, the team must determine the level of support required for success.
- Teacher, Case Manager, & ETR Recommendations
Along with completing the CWE and LOSA, these staff members will use the knowledge they have of the student in tandem with our currently available worksite options to provide recommendations for student placement.

Worksite Considerations: High Social Interaction with General Public, High Physical Activity Level
Typical jobs: Students will use a product scanner to restock shelves, blocking shelves (making sure the products are in the correct position on the shelves), add discount tags to products, dust shelves, clean shelves, answer customer questions concerning location, price, and use of merchandise or direct them to customer services; relocate items around the entire store.

Typical level of physical activity: High - students should be able to follow multiple step instructions (2 or more steps) from store supervisor and advocate if they have questions; have physical strength, stamina, and balance for 60 minutes or more on the floor. There are opportunities to work independently (given stamina, cooperation, responsibility, accuracy, and work productivity) as well as leadership opportunities for students to meet with supervisor(s) to discuss the work schedule for the day and lead student meetings.

Worksite Considerations: Moderate Social Activity Level
Typical jobs: Students typically complete 4-5 jobs per day. These jobs may include vacuuming, dusting, wiping windows, filling condiments, cleaning door knobs and handrails, setting up for resident activities, cleaning tables and chairs, office projects as needed, delivering mail/flyers, and assisting with delivering laundry to the resident’s rooms.

Typical level of social interactions: Moderate amount of social interactions with the Chesterbrook residents, employees, and the general public while working and/or eating lunch or taking a break.

Davis Center Catering
Davis Career Center
The Davis Center Catering class is a self-sustaining catering program that provides a wide variety of catered meals for independent clients throughout the northern Virginia area. Meal contents vary and can serve anywhere from 10 to 300+ people. Students work to prepare these contracted jobs throughout the school year, as well as meals, seasonal treats, and other goodies for sale to DCC staff, families, and our community members. Students are taught and must follow industry-standard safety and sanitization practices.

Typical jobs:
Food Preparation
-Prepare ingredients to use in cooking (chopping and peeling vegetables, cutting meat, etc.)
-Weigh, measure, and mix ingredients according to recipes using various kitchen utensils and equipment (mixer, stove, oven, etc.)
-Check food while cooking to stir or turn
Baking
-Measure and combine ingredients using mixers, blenders, heat sources, and other equipment to make baked goods, such as cookies, bread, cakes, etc.
Dishwashing
-Rinse, scrape, or soak all items before washing them
-Set up a 3-compartment sink with ECOLAB detergent and sanitizer solutions
-Wash/scrub items in the first sink in a detergent solution
-Rinse items in the second sink
-Sanitize items in the third sink in a sanitizing solution
-Air dry all items
-Put away dry dishes
Cleaning
-Sweep floors
-Laundry- hang chef coats, fold towels
-Clean and sanitize equipment (tables, mixers, etc)
Catering
-Students will help with catering events in the community.
-Students will prepare, deliver and serve large groups (up to 100) buffet style lunches

Typical level of physical activity: High - lifting large quantities of food and catering supplies, ability to stand for extended amounts of time in a busy and noisy commercial kitchen environment, operating and cleaning commercial kitchen equipment. Must be able to navigate tight spaces.
Typical level of social interactions: Mixed - work is completed as a team in the commercial kitchen at the Davis Center. There is a moderate level of interaction with the public on shopping, delivering, and catering opportunities.
Uniform requirements: Dark pants and white short-sleeved shirts, sneakers. Students will be provided with 2 chef coats to be worn during food preparation. Students should bring an extra set of clothes in case uniform gets wet during work.
Typical Daily Schedule: Daily schedule can vary depending on number of jobs, holidays, and various other factors; all students receive ILS and WRS instruction each day.

The hotel worksites offer a variety of different tasks for our students in several areas of the hotels. DCC students may work in the kitchen assisting with food prep or dishes, with housekeeping, with laundry services, and/or in the hotel lobby/restaurant area. Students may prepare for and break down after banquets, assist with deliveries/inventory, and support events/catering. Some students may also have opportunities to work with Human Resources, customer service, and in the pool and fitness centers. Students interact and may be paired with Marriott, DoubleTree, Hyatt, and Embassy Suites employees as they complete their daily responsibilities. Students learn to navigate the hotel, use elevators, and appropriately greet Marriott/DoubleTree/Hyatt/Embassy Suites customers.

Physical activities include lifting trash, stripping hotel beds, pushing a laundry cart, carrying silverware trays, moving new stock, lifting room service trays, wiping tables and chairs, vacuuming/mopping, and sorting laundry.
Typical level of social interactions: Mixed
High Levels of Interaction with Peers/Coworkers: Students interact and work with hotel employees daily and may report to a hotel supervisor. Students must be able to work in group situations and take instruction from hotel staff members.
Low Levels of Interaction with the General Public: Students interact with (greet) hotel customers in the areas of housekeeping, on the guest floors, and in the lobby/restaurant area.

McLean Bible Church

McLean Bible Church (MBC) is a non-denominational Christian megachurch with several locations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. DCC students volunteer each day at the Tysons Corner campus, which is their largest campus.

Typical jobs: Students participate in a variety of tasks to support MBC operations. Students may work in the MBC Café which includes stocking, cleaning, recycling, assembling pizza boxes, and assembling large boxed lunches for occasional events. Students may support work in the Copy Center, which includes printing, laminating, perforating, poster making, collating and coiling notebooks, special seasonal mailing projects, and making paper deliveries throughout the church as needed. Students work in Kid’s Quest and preschool classrooms cleaning and disinfecting toys. Additional work includes supporting Access Ministries with snack and craft inventory for weekend classes, shredding, decorating for events, and putting together goodie bags. Students may assist in cleaning large sanctuary rooms by sanitizing armrests, sweeping, and re-aligning bibles and other reading resources.

Worksite Considerations: High Physical Activity Level
Typical Jobs: Students have various jobs in the exercise areas (cardio, weights, and studios), laundry room, and locker rooms. Students play an instrumental role in maintaining the sanitization and appearance of the gym for customers. In the exercise areas, students clean a wide variety of exercise machines and equipment, vacuum and mop floors, and clean mirrors. Students also: collect used towels through the locker rooms and utilize the washer and dryer to clean them; fold the towels and restock them for customers to use; inventory and restock hygiene products (i.e. hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, and q-tips); clean the mirrors, counters, and lockers within the locker rooms; inventory and restock the cooler with drinks; replenish paper towel dispensers; and collect waste and recycling throughout the facility and properly dispose of it. At McLean Racquet & Health Club, students complete food prep (washing, cutting, weighing, etc.) and dishwashing in the kitchen, as well as maintain the bistro area. Students may be paired with employees as they complete their daily jobs. Students also have the opportunity to navigate throughout the facility, and appropriately interact with s employees and customers. Daily routine is consistent, but students need to have some flexibility with schedule change as needed.

Typical Jobs: The elementary school worksite offers a variety of different jobs and tasks for our students in several areas of the school. DCC students may work in the kitchen assisting with food prep, dishes, cleaning, and stocking. Students may occasionally help with serving food or other miscellaneous tasks. Students also have the opportunity to work in the library where they shelve books, check books out, take inventory, as well as clean and assist with clerical tasks. Some students may have the opportunity to assist in classrooms helping with grading, reading with students, assisting with taking students to bathroom and/or specials, and clerical tasks for the teachers. Students may be paired with a mentor teacher or staff member as they complete their daily responsibilities. Students learn to navigate the school and appropriately greet staff and students.

Physical activities for the kitchen include: lifting trays, lifting boxes of food, dishwashing, breaking down boxes, sweeping and cleaning tables. In the library the level of physical activity is a bit lower- where students are able to sit for periods of time while working but physical activities might include: cleaning shelves, reshelving books, checking books out.
Typical level of social interactions: Mixed
High Levels of Interaction with Peers/Coworkers: Students interact and work with cafeteria workers, librarians, teachers and students daily and may report to an area supervisor (kitchen). Students must be able to work in group situations and take instruction from kitchen, office, admin, or librarian staff members.
Low Levels of Interaction with the General Public: Students interact with students occasionally in the library or front office and are encouraged to use social skills with them during downtime or while working in specific areas.
Uniform requirements: Business casual. Nice Jeans/black pants/khakis. Nice shirt (polo, plain, no words) or school swag. Sneakers/Closed toed shoes.
OTHER WORK OPPORTUNITIES
As we plan for each new school year, other opportunities may become available based on school and student needs. These opportunities could include school-based opportunities at nearby FCPS schools, retail locations, churches, as well as unique opportunities that may become available throughout the school year.
