Dr. S. John Davis was the Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent from 1970 to 1979 and Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Virginia from 1979 to 1990. As State Superintendent he initiated state-wide standards that would later become the Virginia Standards of Learning. He was previously a teacher and administrator in Arlington and Fairfax County.
